Learning Objectives

Heart disease is the number one killer of women in the United States, yet many women are unaware of their risk factors and potential symptoms, which differ from those of men. Increased awareness is key to preventing heart problems.

Thus, Heart of a Woman is designed to educate women about the gender-specific symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease and how women can proactively improve their own heart health. Attendees can customize the experience with small-group breakout sessions in the afternoon.

Nursing Learning Outcome:

Upon completion of this activity, the Registered Nurse will be able to describe at least one new learning related to  preventative measures, early recognition signs and management needed to educate female patients in order to improve outcomes for gender specific heart disease, as evidenced by self-reported intent to change practice on the post activity evaluation tool.

In women, the greatest cause of death is heart attack. Yet, many women are unaware of the risk factors and the warning signs of heart attack, which differ from those of men. Increased awareness is key to preventing heart problems, so Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart & Vascular Center and the National Federation of Business and Professional Women Clubs – Houston, affiliate of BPW International, are partnering to host “Heart of a Woman.” This exciting conference is designed to educate women about the gender-specific symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease and how women can proactively improve their own heart health. In addition, guest speakers representing science, medicine, and government will discuss their roles in addressing gender discrepancies in cardiovascular care for women.
