Hands-On Endoluminal Therapies for Gastroenterologists and Surgeons - Feb, 21, 2026
*Workshop is open only to first, second, third and fourth year fellows and surgery residents, as well as practicing gastroenterologists and surgeons*
Course Description: This hands-on tissue explant lab provides participants with practical experience in advanced therapeutic endoscopic techniques and technologies. Throughout the course, participants rotate through nine faculty-led stations designed to simulate real clinical scenarios. The curriculum focuses on procedures such as mucosal ablation and resection, tissue closure, intraluminal stenting, gastroesophageal reflux treatments, and ERCP. Each station offers focused instruction, technique rehearsal, and the opportunity to handle specialized devices and equipment in a controlled learning environment..

Learning Objectives
Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to:
- Demonstrate proper technique for endoscopic mucosal resection using multiple methods.
- Describe important principles of electrosurgical energy as applied in the GI tract.
- Demonstrate the use of rescue strategies for GI bleeding or perforation following advanced tissue removal in the GI tract.
- Discuss technical difference between endoscopic submucosal resection (EMR) and endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD).
- Demonstrate full thickness resection of small gastric mass.
- Discuss the advantages of per oral choledochoscopy over cholangiography in managing select biliary pathology.
- Describe the use of lumen apposing metal stents.
- Demonstrate transoral incisionless fundoplication treatment of GERD.
Hands-On Stations & Descriptions
Faculty | Description | |
ERCP | Dr. Jeffrey Lee (MD Anderson) | Hands-on training in endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, including biliary cannulation, stone extraction, sphincterotomy, and use of cholangioscopy for direct bile duct visualization. |
Intestinal Ultrasound | Dr. Malcolm Irani (HMH) | Use of high-frequency endoscopic or transabdominal ultrasound to visualize intestinal wall layers, detect pathology, and guide procedural planning. |
TIFF (Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication) | Dr. Wasseem Skef (UT Houston) | Endoscopic GERD treatment using a transoral approach to create a partial gastroesophageal valve to reduce reflux without incisions. |
Endoscopic Suturing 1 | Dr. Deepika Satish (HMH) | Introduction to endoluminal suturing techniques for tissue approximation, defect closure, and securing devices using suturing platforms. |
Endoscopic Suturing 2 | Dr. Thomas McCarty (HMH) | Advanced suturing scenarios post-EMR/ESD, including closure of mucosal defects and reinforcement of resection sites. |
Colonoscopy / EMR | Dr. Tara Keihanian (Baylor) | Focused training in colonoscopic polypectomy and endoscopic mucosal resection techniques for flat or sessile lesions. |
RFA / Cryoablation | Dr. Vaibhav Wadhwa (UT Houston) | Application of radiofrequency ablation and cryotherapy for Barrett’s esophagus or neoplastic mucosal lesions. Covers equipment setup and safety. |
Hemorrhoidal Banding | Dr. Neha Mathur (HMH) | Hands-on practice of rubber band ligation for symptomatic internal hemorrhoids using endoscopic or anoscopic guidance. |
