TMC Collaborative: Medical-Surgical Certification Review Course- April 29, 2026
The Medical-Surgical Certification Exam Review Course is a comprehensive and intensive two-day program specially designed for registered nurses seeking to enhance their knowledge and skills in medical-surgical nursing and successfully pass the medical-surgical certification exam. This didactic course covers essential topics, evidence-based practices, and critical thinking strategies required to excel in the medical-surgical nursing field.
Target Audience
Registered nurses who are planning to take the medical-surgical certification exam or those seeking to refresh their knowledge and skills in medical-surgical nursing.
Learning Objectives
At the completion of this activity, nurses are expected to gain enhanced knowledge of common medical-surgical pathophysiology and treatments, current issues and trends, and test-taking strategies that foster confidence in sitting for the certification exam. This will be evidenced by self-reported knowledge gains on the post-activity evaluation survey.
Participants must attend the activity in its entirety and complete the corresponding evaluation for CEs!.

Danya Garner, PhD, RN, NPD-BC, OCN, CCRN is Associate Director of Continuing Professional Education at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. With nearly 20 years of experience spanning oncology, critical care, and nursing education, he is a nationally recognized leader and past President of the Oncology Nursing Society. Dr. Garner is board-certified in oncology, critical care, and nursing professional development. He has authored numerous publications, served as faculty and invited speaker at national and international conferences, and continues to mentor the next generation of nurse leaders. Passionate about advancing nursing practice, Dr. Garner is dedicated to strengthening certification, education, and interprofessional collaboration to improve patient care outcomes.
Eunice E. Ihaza -Gbenoba, DNP, ANP-C, BC
After graduating from nursing school at University of Benin Teaching Hospital in Nigeria in 1982, she moved to Houston, Texas to pursue her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Texas Woman’s University from 2002-2004. She is currently board certified as an Adult Nurse Practitioner by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners. She was recognized as one of the leading providers in Diabetes care by NCQA.
Dr. Ihaza joined the Houston Methodist and Weill Cornell Medical College in the Division of Diabetes, Obesity, and Lipid Management in July 2006 as an Advance Practice Nurse. Her special interests include general diabetes, thyroid diseases, polycystic ovarian syndrome and obesity management. Dr. Gbenoba was a co-Principal investigator on double blinded, placebo-controlled study to evaluate cardiovascular outcomes and endo barrier trial force on combining surgical intervention with medical management for treatment of diabetes for the obese patients.
She earned her Doctorate degree in Nursing Practice at Chamberlain College of Nursing, graduating with high honors. Her DNP project focused on answering the question “Does preoperative education on achieving target glucose levels in the peri-operative period prevent surgical wound infection in adult patients with diabetes who have undergone cardiovascular surgery”?
She is a renowned and dynamic speaker in the field of diabetes.
Katie Broadway, MSN, RN, CNRN, SCRN is a dedicated Professional Practice Leader at Houston Methodist Hospital, specializing in neuroscience and stroke nursing. With advanced certifications including CNRN (Certified Neuroscience Registered Nurse), SCRN (Stroke Certified Registered Nurse), and NPD-BC (Nursing Professional Development – Board Certified), Katie brings a wealth of clinical expertise and a passion for advancing nursing practice.
She holds a Master of Science in Nursing and plays a pivotal role in shaping professional development initiatives, mentoring staff, and promoting evidence-based care across the neuroscience service line. Katie is committed to fostering excellence in patient outcomes and empowering nurses through education, leadership, and innovation.
Mark Littler, PhD, RN, CMSRN, NPD-BC, is an experienced nurse educator with over 11 years in acute care settings. He currently serves as the Houston Market Director of Nursing Education at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center, where he leads evidence-based training programs for both licensed and unlicensed staff. Mark began his career as a medical-surgical nurse, where he developed a passion for mentoring nurse residents and promoting professional development. He transitioned into nursing education, earning his Master of Science in Nursing and Doctor of Philosophy with an emphasis in nursing education. His expertise includes adult learning principles, new employee orientation programs, curriculum design, and competency validation.
Houston Methodist is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.
This NCPD activity is jointly provided by Houston Methodist Hospital, in collaboration with Harris Health System, Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center and The University of Texas Medical Branch Health.
To be awarded 7.25 continuing professional development hours, the participant must attend the program in its entirety and complete the evaluation tool.
