"Music in Health Care" is a one-day symposium exploring the applications of music within the health care settings and the fields of music therapy and music medicine. The Music in Health Care Symposium will be held February 7, 2024, in-person at the Houston Methodist Research Institute.

Learning will take place via various activities including a keynote speaker, symposium presentations, panel discussion, workshop, and a poster session. The overarching goal is to demonstrate quality, evidence based, and ethical uses of music medicine, music therapy, and music enrichment in the hospital environment. Breakfast and lunch are included.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to: 

  • Differentiate the practices of music medicine, music therapy, and music enrichment when reading peer reviewed literature, when authoring research and literature, and when requesting services for patients, medical staff, or the hospital environment.
  • Discuss best practices for placing referrals and prioritizing available resources for music in health care services.
  • Describe how music can activate regions of the brain, influence memory, emotion regulation, arousal, and physiological responses.
  • Identify the various uses of music and research related to music in the medical setting for clinical and experiential purposes and review the scope of practice for each. 
  • Identify opportunities to collaborate in future research, clinical practice, and experiential encounters in music medicine, music therapy in the healthcare setting.

Keynote Speaker

Suzanne B. Hanser, Ed.D., MT-BC is Founding Chair Emerita & Professor of Music Therapy at Berklee College of Music and President of the International Association for Music & Medicine. She is Past President of the World Federation of Music Therapy and National Association for Music Therapy.

Her books include The New Music Therapist's Handbook, Integrative Health through Music Therapy: Accompanying the Journey from Illness to Wellness and Manage Your Stress and Pain, book and CD, with Dr. Susan Mandel. Her most recent book, Music for Wellness: Feel the Music, See the Light will be published this year. Her courses on music and wellness may be found on Coursera and Berklee Online.

She has published research in multi-disciplinary journals and is the recipient of many awards, including AMTA’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

Directed Music Listening for Stroke Recovery 

To develop a better understanding of the effects of music listening on the brain, CPAM tested both music with emotional attachment and unfamiliar music on healthy subjects while undergoing fMRI assessment and found increased brain activation in the emotion and memory areas with familiar music and in the focused attention areas with unfamiliar music.
