This educational program aims to increase awareness and enhance the understanding of human trafficking and its profound impact on individuals and communities. Attendees will explore the dangers of social media grooming, the fundamentals of human trafficking, and the critical role of multidisciplinary teams in identifying and supporting victims. The program features expert presentations, including insights from law enforcement, healthcare professionals, and forensic nursing case reviews, emphasizing trauma-informed care and advocacy for victims. Participants will gain practical tools to recognize red flags, respond effectively to trafficking situations, and collaborate with available resources to ensure safety and recovery.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the Scope and Impact of Human Trafficking: Explain the prevalence of human trafficking globally and locally, differentiating between sex trafficking, labor trafficking, and smuggling, and identifying the populations most at risk.
  2. Identify Signs and Risk Factors: Recognize the physical, behavioral, and situational indicators of human trafficking in various settings, including healthcare and community environments, to facilitate timely intervention.
  3. Understand the Role of Social Media and Online Grooming: Examine the methods traffickers use to exploit social media and technology to groom and recruit victims, particularly targeting vulnerable youth.
  4. Implement Trauma-Informed Care for Victims: Apply trauma-informed, patient-centered approaches to care for trafficking victims, ensuring their immediate healthcare needs and psychological safety are met.
  5. Collaborate Effectively Across Disciplines: Utilize multidisciplinary strategies, including partnerships with law enforcement, forensic nursing, and advocacy organizations, to support victims and combat human trafficking effectively.
