Principles of ECMO Management - September 6, 2023

September 6, 2023

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is one of the most exciting and fastest growing fields in cardiothoracic medicine and nursing. ECMO is used as a life-saving option in managing cardiopulmonary failure, bridging patients to lung transplantation, and prophylactically supporting high risk cardiac surgical cases. Now more than ever, understanding how ECMO can serve as a life-saving rescue therapy for infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in our community is crucial during this rapidly spreading and devastating global pandemic. Welcome to the Principles of ECMO Management Seminar! A comprehensive and collaborative seminar whose goal is to prepare clinicians who diligently seek improbable solutions to complex patient conditions requiring ECMO. As the complexity of patient care involving ECMO evolves, the Center for Nursing Research, Education, and Practice’s Critical Care Academy and the Mary E. Mahoney Simulation Center are committed to educate, equip, and empower clinicians to find those improbable solutions.

Target Audience

Registered Nurses, physical therapists, case managers, social workers, respiratory therapists, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants will benefit from this course.

Learning Objectives

Nursing Learning Outcome:

At the end of this activity, participants will be able to identify 1 problem-solving technique to reduce the number of complications ECMO patients' experience, as evidenced by self-reported intent to change practice on the post activity evaluation tool.
