PACU Bootcamp: Putting it All Together
This interactive PACU Boot Camp prepares nurses to provide evidence-based care for high-acuity postoperative patients through expert-led instruction, hands-on skills stations, case-based learning, and interdisciplinary simulation. Participants will strengthen their knowledge and clinical confidence in airway management, ventilator troubleshooting, emergency response, and the care of complex surgical patients to promote safe, timely, and effective patient care in the immediate post-anesthesia setting.
Target Audience
Registered Nurses
Learning Objectives
Learning Outcome:
Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:
1. Describe evidence-based assessment and management strategies for airway compromise during the immediate post-anesthesia phase.
2. Apply clinical reasoning to the management of complex cardiac and neurosurgical postoperative patients, including recognition of patient deterioration and prioritization of nursing interventions.
Identify indications, preparation, and safe administration of commonly used emergency airway and reintubation medications.
3. Integrate evidence-based postoperative assessment findings to guide clinical decision-making during high-risk PACU scenarios, including airway emergencies and code management.
Learning Outcome
Upon completion of this activity, at least 80% of participants will self-report an increase in their knowledge of evidence-based assessment and management of high-acuity postoperative patients, including ventilator troubleshooting, vasoactive infusion management, code management, lumbar drain care, and the recovery of complex surgical patients, as measured by the post-activity evaluation.
