Nursing Grand Rounds: Policy & Advocacy
This seminar will equip nurses with the knowledge and skills necessary to actively engage in policy and advocacy efforts that shape the future of healthcare in Texas and beyond. Participants will explore the vital role nurses play in influencing policy at the local, state, and national levels while examining the Texas Nurses Association’s current legislative priorities. By the end of the seminar, participants will feel empowered to use their professional voice to advance nursing and improve patient outcomes through policy influence.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, 75% of the participants, as indicated by the post-evaluation survey, will report increased knowledge of the role of nursing in shaping healthcare policy (at local, state and national levels), current legislative priorities in of the Texas Nurses Association and effective communication strategies for engaging with policy makers.

Dr. Serena Bumpus currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the Texas Nurses Association where she is responsible for providing oversight of related entities and programs including the Texas Nurses Foundation and the Texas Peer Assistance Program for Nurses and other programs as identified. She is responsible for executing the ongoing vision for the association as it relates to the changing healthcare landscape and the nursing profession. Dr. Bumpus’s nursing career spans over 23 years where she has held various positions from staff nurse to Nurse Executive. She has demonstrated a strong career trajectory with involvement in leadership, governance, and advancing the nursing profession
As the CEO of the largest professional nursing organization in Texas, Dr. Bumpus has successfully led and advocated for legislative support toward increased funding for nursing education, workplace violence protections, nursing workforce support, improvements in safe staffing, and state level funding for nursing scholarships and nursing loan repayment programs in Texas. She has made significant strides in improving outcomes and advancing nursing practice throughout her career. Serena has presented nationally and internationally on the power of the nurse’s voice in health policy development and published several articles on the topic
