Houston Methodist Sugar Land Medical Staff Leadership Retreat - January 9, 2026
This interactive training equips physician leaders with practical, time-efficient communication skills to strengthen trust, empathy, and collaboration in high-pressure clinical environments. Through brief discussions, real-world scenarios, and hands-on practice, participants learn how to communicate clearly, demonstrate empathy, and use micro-skills that reduce friction, improve psychological safety, and enhance team engagement. The session emphasizes immediately applicable tools that physician leaders can use during everyday clinical interactions to improve outcomes for both teams and patients.
Target Audience
Physician Leaders at Houston Methodist Sugarland
Learning Objectives
- Apply structured communication frameworks (e.g., closed-loop communication, the Clinical Empathy Loop, and alignment statements) to clearly convey plans, acknowledge emotions, and confirm shared understanding during high-pressure clinical interactions.
- Demonstrate effective use of empathy and emotional intelligence by recognizing emotional cues, regulating tone, and delivering a 60-second empathetic response that de-escalates tension and builds trust with interprofessional team members.
- Implement communication micro-skills (e.g., pause-then-respond, two-way check-ins, transparent follow-up) consistently in daily clinical practice to reduce misunderstandings, strengthen psychological safety, and improve team engagement.
- Evaluate and adjust personal communication behaviors by identifying intent–impact gaps and modifying tone, language, or approach to improve clarity, collaboration, and trust.
- Commit to and perform at least one trust-building behavior (e.g., asking team needs, closing the loop within 24 hours, acknowledging contributions) during the next clinical shift.
- Apply change leadership frameworks (Lewin’s Change Model, Bridges’ Transition Model, and high-level principles) to anticipate peer/peer group reactions and plan strategies for managing resistance.
- Demonstrate effective communication during change by delivering structured messages that include context, clarity, empathy, collaboration, and clear commitments.
- Implement leadership behaviors consistently to stabilize peers/peer groups, validate emotions, maintain clarity, and reinforce trust throughout transitions.
- Reflect and commit to one actionable change leadership behavior that will be applied in their next applicable professional scenario to support team engagement and reduce resistance.
