Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospitalist Patient Experience Training - May 8, 2026
Hospitalist Patient Experience Training is a structured educational activity for HMSL hospitalists focused on improving patient-centered communication and care coordination behaviors that directly influence patient experience survey outcomes (HCAHPS) and clinical quality. The training includes didactic instruction on HCAHPS domains, practical communication frameworks (e.g., AIDET, teach-back, “Commit to Sit,” key words/phrases), strategies for difficult interactions, and best practices for interdisciplinary bedside rounds (IBR) and discharge communication, with planned next steps that include interdisciplinary skills simulation and ongoing sustainment resources.
Target Audience
Hospitalists (Physicians)
Learning Objectives
- Demonstrate the AIDET framework in inpatient encounters by (a) introducing role, (b) setting expectations for duration/next steps, and (c) providing clear explanations without jargon, as observed in case-based practice or simulation.
- Apply intentional listening by using pause-and-invite techniques to fully elicit patient concerns and utilize the teach-back method to assess and confirm patient understanding of the care plan or discharge.
- Implement at least three IBR best practices (e.g., pre-brief/close the loop, include bedside nurse/case manager, “commit to sit,” manage up team, involve family) to demonstrate “working well together” and coordinated discharge planning during a rounding scenario or simulation.
- Recognize and articulate how provider behaviors influence the patient experience.
- Apply key communication and engagement behaviors to enhance patient interactions.
