Newly hired staff require intense education about the specialty patient population they are caring for (neurological, neurosurgical, and stroke patients). The hospital is steadily growing by increasing beds as well as providers, which requires nurses to provide more specialized care to higher acuity patients. By providing an in-depth neuro-specific course, nurses will be equipped with the knowledge to better care for these complex patients.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the management of intracranial pressure dynamics 
  • Discuss at least three elements for troubleshooting an external ventricular/lumbar drain 
  • Identify and describe the procedures of the 4 cranial surgeries in order to educate patients and their families 
  • Describe the variety of spinal surgeries and the nursing care associated with recovery 
  • Describe the different symptoms, diagnostic procedures, treatment, and management of neuro abscesses, encephalitis, and meningitis 
  • Identify differences and similarities in disorders such as Diabetes Insipidus, Cerebral Salt Wasting, and SIADH 
  • Describe the nursing management of patients who experience seizure 
  • Discuss the short and long term treatment of seizures 
  • Describe the difference between the presentation/symptoms, diagnostics, treatment, management, and prognosis of ALS, Myasthenia Gravis, Guillain-Barre, and Multiple Sclerosis 
  • Describe the different assessments, recommendations, and goals of nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy in an inpatient rehab setting 
  • Review the role of music therapy as it relates to the stroke patient

Learning Outcome

 

Based on the knowledge obtained from the learning activity, the learner will make changes to their practice to better care for the patient population as evidence by:

  • 90% of learners will report intent to change practice upon completion of educational activity
  • 100% of learners will actively engage in open discussions during educational activity
