This program provides caregivers and healthcare professionals with a foundational understanding of caregiver burnout and vicarious trauma and their impact on well-being, performance, and patient care. Participants will examine common risk factors, early warning signs, and evidence-based strategies to build resilience, set healthy boundaries, and access supportive resources. The program emphasizes self-awareness, peer support, and sustainable practices to promote emotional well-being and professional longevity.

Target Audience

This class is designed for Houston Methodist Registered Nurses seeking to gain knowledge about identifying and navigating nurse burnout to promote safe patient outcomes. 

Learning Objectives

  • Vicarious Trauma: Define, recognize, and navigate the impact on job performance as well as a contributing factor for burnout.
  • Sources of Stress: Identify and define environmental, social, physiological, cognitive, and emotional sources of stress
  • Stress Responses: Identify physiological and psychological responses to stress
  • Burnout: Define burnout, recognize signs of burnout, and identify how burnout affects patient safety
  • Burnout and Vicarious Trauma Management: Identify strategies to cope with burnout and trauma, and recognize how to assist patients and others with vicarious trauma
