This course prepares registered nurses to safely and competently administer chemotherapy by building foundational knowledge of antineoplastic therapy and evidence-based practices. Participants will review principles of chemotherapy handling, administration, monitoring, and management of adverse effects, with an emphasis on patient safety, regulatory compliance, and interprofessional collaboration. The course supports clinical confidence and adherence to organizational and professional standards of care.

Target Audience

Houston Methodist Registered Nurses seeking to gain or improve chemotherapy administration skills. 

Learning Objectives

 

  • Define cancer and cancer treatments​

  • Calculate body surface area (BSA) and absolute neutrophil count (ANC)​

  • Describe administration principles for hazardous drugs​

  • Describe routes of administration for antineoplastic medications​

  • Identify pre-treatment assessments and medications ​

  • Identify medication and documentation errors ​

  • Review inpatient cancer care and safety protocols​

  • Differentiate adverse events associated with oncologic treatment and review appropriate interventions​

  • Evaluate hazardous drug spill and exposure management​

  • Identify intravenous oncology medications and inpatient protocols​

  • Demonstrate safe chemotherapy administration through return demonstration​
