
End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC)
The Core Curriculum addresses the essential elements needed to care for both family and patient during chronic illness and End-of-Life. The Core Curriculum is made up of a eight different modules and will be divided up into four half-day sessions. This course will cover Module 2: Symptom Management & Ethical Issues in Palliative Nursing.
The End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) Project is a national and international End-of-Life/palliative care educational program administered by City of Hope (COH) designed to enhance palliative care in nursing. Materials are copyrighted by City of Hope and the American Association o f Colleges of Nursing (AACN) and are used with permission.

Symptom Management
At the completion of this module, the participant will be able to:
1. Identify common symptoms associated for patients across the life span.
2. Identify potential causes of symptoms seen in serious illnesses
3. Describe assessment of symptoms seen in serious illnesses
4. Describe interventions that can prevent or diminish symptoms
Ethical Issues in Palliative Care Nursing
1. At the completion of this module, the participant will be able to:
2. Discuss ethical issues and dilemmas that may arise in care of individuals with serious illness
3. Describe specific roles of the nurse in ethical decision-making.
4. Describe advance care planning and its role in preventing ethical dilemmas.
5. Apply ethical principles utilized in addressing end-of-life/palliative care dilemmas, including models for case analysis and use of ethics
committees.
