
End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC)
Overview
The Core Curriculum addresses the essential elements needed to care for both family and patient during chronic illness and End-of-Life. The Core Curriculum is made up of a eight different modules and will be divided up into four half-day sessions. This course will cover Module 1: Palliative Nursing and Module 2: Pain Management.
The End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium (ELNEC) Project is a national and international End-of-Life/palliative care educational program administered by City of Hope (COH) designed to enhance palliative care in nursing. Materials are copyrighted by City of Hope and the American Association o f Colleges of Nursing (AACN) and are used with permission.

Learning Objectives
Part 1: Palliative Nursing
At the completion of this module, the participant will be able to:
• Describe the role of the nurse in providing quality palliative care for patients across the lifespan and health settings
• Identify with the role of collaboration within interdisciplinary or interprofessional team members while implementing the nursing role in
palliative care.
• Recognize how health disparities, population demographics, healthcare economics, and service delivery necessitate improved professional
preparation for palliative care.
• Describe the philosophy and principles of hospice and palliative care that can be integrated across settings to affect quality care for
individuals with serious illness,
• Discuss aspects of assessing physiological, psychological, spiritual, cultural, and social domains of quality of life for patients and families
facing serious illness.
Part 2: Pain Management
At the completion of this module, the participant will be able to:
• Identify barriers to adequate pain relief in serious illness for patients across the life span.
• List components of a thorough pain assessment.
• Describe pharmacological and nonpharmacological therapies used to relieve pain.
• Discuss the role of the nurse involved with pain assessment and management in serious illness.
