Clinical Research Education Series (CRES) | “Metal Hypersensitivity Reactions to Implantable Devices"

Evidence shows that most clinical personnel and healthcare workers are unaware of the components of implantable devices. The focus of this lesson is to educate staff on the evidence of metal hypersensitivity to physiotherapists so that they can be better prepared to identify and support patients with this condition. This presentation will provide information on key components of many implantable medical devices. Participants of this activity will be able to pinpoint and observe beginning signs of metal hypersensitivity. This lesson will provide ways to identify and support patients with this condition.

Employees at Houston Methodist Hospital Research Institute 

Learning Objectives

The learning objective of this course is for participants to be able to implement the following in their practice:

1) Gain an understanding of hypersensitivity to metals in implantable devices.

2) Recognize symptoms of metal hypersensitivity.

3) Identify areas of opportunities to enhance the detection of metal hypersensitivity.

Presenter Bio

Dzifa Dordunoo PhD, RN

Dr Dzifa Dordunoo earned her bachelor's degree (with distinction) from University of Victoria (Canada) and holds a master’s degree from Duke University (USA) with post-master's certificate in clinical research management and teaching. She completed her doctoral education at the University of Maryland Baltimore (USA). She was the inaugural president of the Coalition of African, Caribbean and Black Nurses in British Columbia. She is currently the Director of the University of Victoria Centre for Evidence-Informed Nursing and Healthcare (CEiNHC): A JBI Centre of Excellence and serves on the boards for the Pan-Canadian Nurses of African Descent and the Sickle Cell Association of Canada.

Houston Methodist is accredited as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

To be awarded 1.00 continuing professional development hours, the participant must attend the program in its entirety and complete the evaluation tool.
