Antimicrobial Stewardship: Role of the Physicians and Advanced Practice Providers

The goal of the education and competency is to increase knowledge and awareness in the following areas:

  • Understanding of Antimicrobial Stewardship (ASP) Principles – Informal training on ASP concepts, including antimicrobial resistance (AMR), appropriate antibiotic use, and infection prevention strategies.
  • Recognition of Antibiotic Misuse – Identify inappropriate antibiotic use, including overprescription, incorrect dosing, or unnecessary duration.

  • Role in ASP Interventions –Critical role in ASP, including monitoring for adverse drug reactions, evaluating antibiotic appropriateness, and communicating with prescribers.

  • Diagnostic Stewardship Awareness – Understanding when and how to collect specimens properly to avoid unnecessary antibiotic use.

  • Patient and Family Education on AMR – Educating patients and families on antibiotic adherence, side effects, and the risks of misuse.

  • Explain the importance of selecting the right antibiotic, dose, and duration, and how approaches like de-escalation and IV-to-PO conversion optimize patient care and antimicrobial stewardship efforts
