Learning Objectives

Course Objectives:

  • At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and evidence-based management of high-acuity medical and surgical emergencies, including shock states, sepsis, neurologic emergencies, chest pain, arrhythmias, pulmonary, renal, gastrointestinal, endocrine, and oncologic conditions.

  • Apply diagnostic reasoning and treatment strategies presented in didactic sessions to real-time clinical scenarios involving complex and unstable patients.

  • Interpret radiologic and bedside diagnostic data, including chest X-ray, KUB, ECGs, and Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS), to guide timely clinical decision-making.

  • Demonstrate safe and effective use of critical care devices and technologies, including airway equipment, insulin pumps, CGMs, EZ-IO access, pacemakers, LVADs, Doppler ultrasound, Zoll/LUCAS systems, and LifeVest devices.

  • Perform essential procedural skills using appropriate technique and adherence to current standards, including airway management, ultrasound-guided vascular access, intraosseous access, chest tube management, pacing, and defibrillation.

  • Identify early warning signs and red flags in specialized patient populations (e.g., post–liver transplant, LVAD, endocrine emergencies) to initiate timely escalation of care.

  • Integrate pharmacologic principles discussed in didactic sessions, including antimicrobial therapy, resuscitation medications, renal- and cardiac-specific therapies, and obesity management pharmacotherapy.

  • Exhibit effective multidisciplinary communication and leadership behaviors during high-stress clinical situations, incorporating ethical considerations and patient-centered decision-making.

  • Translate knowledge into practice through high-fidelity simulation, demonstrating clinical judgment, procedural competence, teamwork, and adherence to resuscitation and safety standards.
