At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
- List five conditions known to be cardiovascular risk factors for patients undergoing noncardiac surgery (NCS).
- State three components of risk assessment used in indices to stratify risk.
- Explain why low-risk, asymptomatic patients need not receive additional laboratory or imaging testing and should proceed directly to surgery.
- Describe the appropriate use of cardiac biomarkers to stratify high-risk patients and identify those who may benefit from additional testing.
- Analyze the overutilization of stress testing in many patients and its limited use for high-risk patients who may benefit from revascularization.
