Networks that Govern Cardiomyocyte Proliferation to Facilitate Repair of the Injured Mammalian Heart - Journal-based CME

Journal-based CME Activity

Methodist DeBakey Cardiovascular Journal

Target Audience

This activity is intended for physicians, nurse practitioners, residents, fellows, pharmacists, researchers and other health care professionals.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Explain the significance of lower organisms, such as the newt and zebrafish, having the capacity for complete repair and regeneration of the injured adult heart.
  • Describe how injured neonatal mouse and pig hearts are capable of complete repair due to proliferating cardiomyocytes.
  • Discuss the implications of the adult mammalian heart having approximately 0.5% to 1.0% cardiomyocyte turnover each year.
  • Distinguish key factors and signaling pathways that have been shown to increase cardiomyocyte proliferation and improve cardiac function following injury of the adult mammalian heart.
  • Consider how current studies and discoveries could potentially define future therapies to promote cardiomyocyte proliferation and, ultimately, repair of heart failure in humans.
