Blood Pressure Goals in Critically Ill Patients - Journal-based CME
Journal-based CME Activity
Methodist DeBakey Cardiovascular Journal
As blood pressure targets for ICUs are changing from mean pressure to perfusion pressure, individualized targets should be tailored to specific cardiac pathophysiology and patient characteristics.

Target Audience
This activity is intended for physicians, nurse practitioners, residents, fellows, pharmacists, researchers and other health care professionals.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
- Explain the importance of moving away from a single predefined blood pressure target for all patients and toward a more individualized approach based on patient characteristics.
- Identify criteria that may influence the mean arterial pressure (MAP) required to maintain adequate perfusion in the post-cardiac surgery patient.
- Compare various blood pressure components, including mean, systolic, and diastolic pressures, to determine their association with organ system injury and intensive care unit (ICU) mortality.
- Recommend plans for improving hospital outcomes for patients with both hypotension and hypoperfusion, as mortality is worse in these patients.
- Consider that deficits in perfusion pressure and in mean arterial pressure (MAP) have similar and strong associations with ICU mortality at 2 weeks.
