Summary: Access to culturally competent healthcare providers is a challenge for the LGBTQ+ community and an increase of fundamental knowledge is required. Appropriate use of gender terminology as well as effective and sensitive communication strategies are an easy starting point to ensure LGBTQ+ patients feel comfortable discussing their healthcare needs. Open communication is essential as LGBTQ+ patients suffer from a disproportionate risk of various healthcare conditions which could be positively impacted by enhanced awareness within the medical community. This presentation will navigate through the appropriate use of gender terminology, evaluate effective communication strategies when discussing healthcare needs, and dive into the impact of health outcome disparities in LGBTQ+ patients.
