Clinical Grand Rounds: Nursing Informatics
Overview
In today’s rapidly evolving healthcare landscape, the integration of informatics into nursing practice is more essential than ever. This session provides an in-depth exploration of the history and evolution of nursing informatics, highlighting its pivotal milestones, influential figures, and key developments that have shaped the field. Participants will gain insight into the scope and established standards that govern nursing informatics. Additionally, attendees will learn how technology supports clinical decision-making, enhances data management, and drives evidence-based practice—all critical components for advancing nursing care and improving patient outcomes

Learning Objectives
By the end of this session, participants will be able to demonstrate understanding of the evolution, scope, standards, and current relevance of nursing informatics, as well as critically assess the future directions and technological innovations shaping the field. Attendees will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to integrate informatics tools into clinical practice, improve patient outcomes, and enhance decision-making processes in healthcare settings.

Juliana J. Brixey, PhD, MPH, MSN, RN has 30 years of experience in nursing, spanning both management and direct patient care. Her expertise includes working in general and vascular surgery, recovery rooms, and a renal diabetes unit. Over the years, Dr. Brixey has held various roles such as head nurse, administrator on duty, pheresis nurse, assistant head nurse, and staff nurse.
She played a pivotal role in creating the Applied Health Informatics graduate program at McWilliams School of Biomedical Informatics (SBMI) and served as its director. In November 2013, Dr. Brixey became the Director of Interprofessional Education at SBMI. That same year, she began a joint faculty appointment at both SBMI and the Cizik School of Nursing. In 2015, she was appointed Director of the UTHealth Center for Interprofessional Collaboration (CIPC).
Dr. Brixey's contributions as an educator, nurse, and informatician have been recognized with several awards, including the 2012 John P. McGovern Teaching Award, given by SBMI students to the faculty member who most effectively encourages independent thought, builds student confidence, and fosters professional development. Additionally, she was honored by the Texas Nursing Association-District 9 as one of the "20 Outstanding Nurses of 2012."
