Bioethics Intensive Course - April 7-11, 2025
Program Overview
The quality of healthcare is improved through the identification, analysis, and resolution of ethical concerns. Recognizing this, hospitals institute mechanisms and means to resolve ethical uncertainty or conflict. For many hospitals, this may mean “charging” individuals with little to no ethics background and mediation training to resolve potentially complex ethical challenges by chairing ethics committees, being members of such committees, or conducting ethics consultations. This unique course emphasizes learn-by-doing with a practical and clinically-based focus. Its learner-centered model promotes sessions to be customized to individual needs for people who want more background and skills in clinical ethics consultation. Participants are encouraged to submit clinical ethics cases they have previously encountered and hospital policies they are currently working on to receive direct feedback through the course.
There is a need to keep health care professionals up-to-date with current knowledge of common ethical problems and dilemmas in medicine and to provide skills and strategies to address them. This intensive course will discuss various principles of and approaches to a variety of bioethics topics in medical practice, law, research, and public policy through the use of lectures, case discussions, small group discussions, and workshops. This program ultimately seeks to best position individuals to respond effectively to difficult ethical issues in today’s complex health care system.
